Topic: Pop Culture and Morality in America

Does Popular Culture teach immoral values?
Focus: Reality Television

The effect of realty television on Americans’ morals is a part of the sociological perspective because our morals as a specific culture have evolved over the years. Prior to the 1960’s American-life was very conservative. The rates of pre-marital sex, teenage pregnancy, divorce, violence, and same-sex marriage have rapidly increased over the years. Controversial issues that were once hidden from the public eye, have become mainstream. It no longer uncommon to see homosexual relationships on television, or once taboo topics such as pre-marital sex being shown on reality television shows such as, Jersey Shore or The Real World as an everyday ritual. Clothing has also become more sexy and revealing, and language is vile. America is on a slippery slope to moral destruction. Reality television has shaped the way Americans behave.
